The ruling All Progressives Congress has suffered fresh setbacks in the House of Representatives as three lawmakers defected from the party, signalling growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, Peak Newspaper reports.
At Wednesday’s plenary in Abuja, the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read letters of resignation from the affected lawmakers. Rabilu Bala, representing Jama’are/Itas-Gadau Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, announced his defection from the APC to the Peoples Redemption Party, citing internal disagreements within the party and consultations with stakeholders in his constituency. In a similar development, Abubakar Zango of Adamawa State resigned from the APC and joined the African Democratic Congress, saying his decision was guided by conscience and national interest. Also, Abdullahi, who represents Dukku/Nafada Federal Constituency of Gombe State, defected from the APC to the ADC.
The lawmakers said their decisions followed concerns over developments within the ruling party and the need to better represent their constituents, as political consultations and coalition talks intensify across the country ahead of the next election cycle.
Although the APC still maintains a comfortable majority in the National Assembly, the latest defections highlight growing tensions within some of its state structures, with analysts noting increasing repositioning by politicians across party lines.
The Peoples Redemption Party and the African Democratic Congress have both continued to attract attention in recent months as opposition platforms absorbing defectors and seeking to expand their political influence ahead of 2027.
Meanwhile, the APC has downplayed the impact of the defections, insisting that the party remains strong and united despite isolated departures, while opposition parties view the trend as evidence of shifting political dynamics in the country’s political landscape.
