The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has expressed concern over the recurring violence in Ile-Ife, warning that the situation could negatively affect teaching and learning at the institution, Peak Newspaper reports.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, raised the concern while reacting to the latest violence in the ancient city, including the clash reported at Mayfair Garage involving rival groups linked to the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
The incident reportedly led to the death of Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, an associate of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, while others were injured.
According to Olarewaju, the security situation should not be viewed only from the perspective of OAU students, as many students live outside the university campus and are therefore exposed to security challenges across the Ile-Ife metropolis.
He warned that continued violence could affect students’ ability to move freely and attend lectures, ultimately disrupting effective teaching and learning.
“Violence will affect the ability for adequate teaching and learning,” the OAU PRO said.
He added that the university is concerned about the safety of both its students and other residents of Ile-Ife.
Olarewaju also said OAU already maintains a relationship with the police but noted that the Osun State Police Command should explain the specific measures being taken to prevent further outbreaks of violence.
Meanwhile, following the killing at Mayfair Garage, Governor Adeleke ordered the immediate arrest of those allegedly involved and directed security agencies to restore normalcy in affected motor parks. He also announced the reintroduction of a Park Management System across Osun State as part of efforts to address recurring disputes over motor-park control.
The governor urged residents to remain calm, stressing that those responsible for the violence would be brought to justice.
The renewed violence has raised fresh concerns about the safety of residents, students and commuters in Ile-Ife, as well as the potential impact of insecurity on academic activities at OAU.
