The Benue State Government has challenged former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to identify the government aide he alleged was responsible for blocking his convoy from visiting Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, Peak Newspaper reports.

The government said Obi should provide the name and evidence to support his allegation that a government official led youths who prevented him from accessing the community.

The controversy followed Obi’s visit to Benue to sympathise with victims and families affected by previous attacks in Yelwata. Obi had alleged that youths barricaded his convoy and that he was informed they were acting on the instructions of a government aide.

The Benue Government has continued to deny involvement in the incident, insisting that it had no reason to prevent Obi from visiting the community.

The development has generated political reactions, with several figures condemning the blockade and warning against actions that could undermine political freedom ahead of the 2027 elections.
