Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris has warned that restoring the petrol subsidy would reverse the economic gains recorded under the Federal Government’s ongoing reforms, Peak Newspaper reports.

Idris said a return to the former subsidy regime could worsen fiscal pressures, weaken investor confidence and recreate distortions, fuel scarcity and incentives for arbitrage.

He cited government figures showing that subsidy savings mobilised about ₦15.8 trillion for the Federation between June 2023 and December 2025, with funds shared across the federal, state and local governments.

The minister acknowledged that Nigerians are facing hardship from the reforms but argued that the solution should be to accelerate measures that improve living standards rather than reverse the policy.
