Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has renewed calls for accountability over the October 2020 Lekki shooting, challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible for authorising the use of force against protesters, Peak Newspaper reports.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), raised the issue on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in a post on his verified X account.
Six years after the incident, the former vice-president argued that Nigerians had yet to receive satisfactory answers to fundamental questions about the events that unfolded during the #EndSARS protests in Lagos.
He maintained that the passage of time should not be used as a reason to abandon the demand for justice, insisting that the authorities must address the concerns of citizens who continue to seek clarity about what happened during the demonstrations.
Atiku’s intervention also extended to the country’s current economic difficulties, with the opposition politician linking the frustration surrounding the shooting to broader concerns about governance, public trust and the rising cost of living.
His comments have once again brought attention to two issues that continue to feature prominently in Nigeria’s public discourse: the demand for accountability over the 2020 protests and the financial pressures confronting households across the country.
“Atiku Questions Who Authorised the Lekki Operation”
In his statement, Atiku questioned who gave the order for security personnel to act against protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate during the #EndSARS demonstrations in October 2020.
