The Federal Government has announced the full closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha for 14 days to allow urgent maintenance and rehabilitation works, Peak Newspaper reports.
The closure will take effect from Monday, September 7, 2026, and is expected to end on Monday, September 21, 2026.
According to the Federal Ministry of Works, the intervention will address deteriorated sections of the bridge, including parts affected by vandalism. The work will also involve resurfacing, repairs to structural components, installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras.
Motorists have been advised to use the Second Niger Bridge via Obosi–Asaba throughout the closure period. Traffic-control personnel, safety barriers and diversion signs will be deployed to manage movement and minimise disruption.
The ministry said construction activities would be carried out day and night to ensure the work is completed as quickly as possible.
