The Nigerian Senate has confirmed 64 ambassadorial nominees, made up of 34 career ambassadors/high commissioners and 30 non-career nominees, Peak Newspaper reports.
Prominent among the non-career appointees are Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo South), former INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Senator Ita Enang, Reno Omokri, Senator Grace Bent, and Senator Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut.
Others cleared include Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, former Chief of Naval Staff; Abdulrahman Dambazau, former Minister of Interior and ex-Chief of Army Staff; Femi Fani-Kayode, former minister; Chioma Ohakim, former Imo State First Lady; Erelu Angela Adebayo (Ekiti); and Florence Ajimobi (Oyo), among others.
Among the 34 career nominees are Sulu-Gambari Olatunji Ahmed (Kwara), Segun Ige (Edo), and Odumah Yvonne Ehinosen (Edo).
The confirmation followed the adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Sani Bello (APC, Niger North), which stated that all nominees were found qualified and that no petitions were received against any of them.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio congratulated the nominees and urged them to represent Nigeria with honour and distinction in their respective postings.
He also encouraged Senator Jimoh Ibrahim to remain actively engaged with the Senate, noting that the legislature would continue to benefit from his experience.
