The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has linked the indiscriminate consumption of alcohol in Nigeria to the rise of banditry, Peak Newspaper reports
NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.
She warned that excessive alcohol consumption can damage vital organs, particularly the kidneys and liver.
Adeyeye explained that the sale of alcohol in sachets and small PET bottles was approved decades ago but later became difficult to control.
She said this prompted NAFDAC to ban the sale of alcoholic drinks in containers of less than 200ml.
According to her, although the ban has faced opposition from some people, the agency is concerned about protecting young Nigerians and the future of children.
NAFDAC has continued to push for stricter control of alcohol sales, particularly products that are easily accessible to young people.
