A maiden public lecture on media, democracy and good governance was Monday held in Birnin Kebbi at KECHEMA hall, Peak Newspaper reports.
The lecture which centered on role of the media in shaping democracy and governance featured lectures and paper presentation by resource persons, Dr Abdulllahi Sani PhD from the department of European languages, federal University Birnin Kebbi delivered paper on the critical role the media play in the sustainance of good governance by holding government accountable and propagating their strides in human and capital developments.
Earlier, in his welcome address , the Chairman,Kebbi state correspondents chapel,Alhaji Kabiru Wurma described the correspondents chapel as the live- wire of NUJ giving the role they play in dismination of information to members of the public ” the chapel consist of professionally trained journalists who represents national dailies sending well written and balanced stories to their respective papers”.
Wurma commended the governor of Kebbi state for his press friendly attitudes and the enormous support he is giving to the media as they operate freely without interference from government quarters” the press are living witnesses of the unprecedented development projects the governor executed within two years in office,we therefore identify with his good governance in the state “.
The maiden public lecture was organised in collaboration with office of the special adviser to the governor on public enlightenment and orientation Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar jamvaly.
In his address, the special adviser to the governor on media and publicity,Alhaji Yahya Sarkin thanked members of the correspondents chapel for their support to the government, while urging them to always balance their report he said the governor is open to press and has been supporting them through the construction of a befitting press center and logistics to aid them in their jobs”Kebbi governor is press friendly therefore journalists are free to carry their duties without any fear of intimidation but the press must deploy professionalism and ethics to avoid stories that are capable of creating tension in the state,they should hear from both parties before going to the press”.
The lecture was attended by the Kebbi state chief of staff,Alhaji Attahiru Maccido, special adviser to the governor on communication and strategy, Alhaji Abdulllahi Idris Zuru and other top government functionaries.
