Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared the African Democratic Congress (ADC) “dead” following a wave of defections by lawmakers in the National Assembly.
Akpabio made the remark amid reports that several legislators have left the ADC for other political platforms, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Labour Party, in what observers describe as a significant political realignment.
The Senate President suggested that the scale of the defections has weakened the party’s structure and influence, raising questions about its future viability in Nigeria’s political space.
Political analysts note that the movement of lawmakers reflects ongoing shifts ahead of future elections, as politicians reposition themselves within parties perceived to have stronger prospects.
However, supporters of the ADC argue that the party remains active and capable of rebuilding, dismissing Akpabio’s comments as political rhetoric.
The development underscores intensifying competition and evolving alliances within Nigeria’s political landscape as parties prepare for upcoming electoral contests.
