Former Nigerian international footballer and coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, has reportedly turned down an alleged appointment as an ambassador of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing concerns that accepting the role could limit his right to freely criticise the electoral body, Peak Newspaper reports.
According to reports circulating in political and sports circles, Amuneke was approached for the ambassadorial role but declined after being informed that his public commentary on INEC’s activities could be restricted if he accepted the position.
The former Super Eagles winger is said to have insisted that he values his independence and would not want to be placed in a position where his voice on national issues, especially electoral matters, would be constrained.
While there has been no official confirmation from INEC regarding the alleged appointment, the development has sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the balance between public appointments and freedom of expression.
