Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase has reportedly passed away at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
Arase, Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police, was appointed in April 2015 by then-President Goodluck Jonathan and retired in June 2016. Following his retirement, he continued to serve the country in various capacities, including as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) in January 2023 under President Muhammadu Buhari. He was later removed from the role in June 2024 by President Bola Tinubu.
A distinguished intelligence officer, Arase once headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the apex intelligence arm of the police. He also served as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State and as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence. His career included international service with a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia.
As of now, neither his family nor the Nigeria Police Force has issued an official confirmation regarding the development.
