Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has returned to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) following his temporary release to attend his mother’s funeral rites, Peak Newspaper reports.
El-Rufai, who had been in ICPC custody since February over allegations bordering on corruption and financial misconduct, was granted temporary release on compassionate grounds after the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, in Cairo, Egypt.
After participating in the burial activities, he returned to court on Tuesday for the continuation of his trial and hearing of his bail application, in line with earlier court orders.
The Federal High Court in Kaduna had earlier ordered that he be remanded in ICPC custody pending the determination of his bail request after he was arraigned on multiple charges, including allegations of fraud and money laundering.
The ICPC had faced criticism from some legal practitioners and observers for releasing him without a fresh court order, but the agency maintained that the decision was based on humanitarian considerations to allow him mourn his mother.
