The Federal Government has launched a new initiative aimed at rewarding academic excellence and innovation across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, Peak Newspaper reports
The programme, known as the Nigeria National Laureate Annual Prize, will recognise outstanding student research with cash rewards of:
– ₦5 million for undergraduate dissertations
– ₦10 million for master’s theses
– ₦20 million for doctoral research
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, described the initiative as a major step toward promoting research as a key driver of national development.
According to the Ministry, the programme is designed to elevate the value of academic work, encourage innovation, and position Nigerian students as contributors to real-world solutions.
The initiative will be funded by the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) in collaboration with its partners, while a 10-member committee led by Prof. Abubakar Sambo will oversee the selection process.
Universities and other tertiary institutions have been directed to nominate outstanding research works, although the committee also has the authority to identify exceptional projects independently.
Timeline for 2026 cycle:
– Call for submissions: May 2026
– Evaluation period: June – September 2026
– Award ceremony: November 2026 (Abuja)
This move is expected to boost academic competition and inspire students to pursue impactful research across various fields.
