The former Chief Nursing Officer for England will officially assume the role following a legal confirmation ceremony in the coming months. She succeeds Justin Welby, who resigned last year amid controversy over his handling of the Church’s most serious child abuse scandal.

As the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah takes on leadership of the Church during a turbulent period marked by safeguarding crises, divisions over same-sex marriage, and declining attendance.

In her first statement, she acknowledged the “huge responsibility” of her appointment but expressed confidence in her faith:

“I feel a deep sense of peace and trust in God to carry me as He always has. At every stage of my journey—through nursing and ministry—I have learned to listen deeply to people and to God’s gentle prompting.”

She emphasized her commitment to unity and service, saying she hopes to “encourage the Church to grow in confidence in the gospel” and “bring people together to find hope and healing.”

Global Anglican Communion leaders welcomed her nomination. Bishop Anthony Poggo, Secretary General of the Communion, urged prayers for her, noting that “the Anglican Communion Office is fully committed to supporting her ministry as she seeks to encourage mutual support and foster unity.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also congratulated her, describing the Church of England as “a vital part of the fabric of our communities,” and added:

“I welcome Dame Sarah Mullally’s appointment as the new Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to hold this role. I wish her every success and look forward to working together.”

Dame Sarah’s appointment marks a historic moment for the Church of England, ushering in a new era of leadership as she prepares to guide the Church through both reform and renewal.
