Iran has announced a 40-day national mourning period and seven public holidays following the death of Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, Peak Newspaper reports.
State television confirmed the development, describing it as a historic moment for the Islamic Republic. Khamenei had led Iran since 1989, succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini.
During the mourning period, nationwide prayers and state-organised memorial events are expected across major cities.
Under Iran’s constitution, the Assembly of Experts will begin the process of selecting a new Supreme Leader.
