The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned the call for foreign intervention by the newly appointed factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki.

Turaki, speaking to journalists on Tuesday, November 18, after gaining access to the PDP secretariat in Abuja, appealed to countries like the United States to “save democracy in Nigeria,” citing alleged threats to the country’s democracy and attacks on Christians. He said, “I want to call on President Trump… He should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I’m calling on all other developed nations: come and save Nigeria, come and save democracy.”

Reacting to the video, APC National Spokesperson Felix Morka described Turaki’s appeal as “reckless and unpatriotic.” The party criticised Turaki, who was declared PDP chairman just 72 hours earlier by a faction of the party, as appearing “desperate, incoherent, and grossly lacking the capacity to manage his party’s crisis.”

The ruling party added that it trusts the international community to reject what it called the PDP’s “disgraceful and unpatriotic call,” branding it a “pitiful distraction from the failure of its internal democracy.” APC also accused the PDP of seeking foreign interference to further “a sinister political agenda.”

In a similar reaction, Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson to President Bola Tinubu, accused Turaki of committing “high treason.” Onanuga posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle:
“We shall never forget this video: the day a Nigerian politician committed high treason for calling for a foreign invasion of Nigeria, all because of an intra-party dispute.”
