Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has explained why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not personally attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York in 2026, Peak Newspaper reports.
Lawal spoke during an interview with Channels Television while addressing questions surrounding the President’s absence from the annual gathering of world leaders.
According to Lawal, Tinubu’s decision not to travel to New York was connected to other official engagements that required his attention elsewhere. Rather than leaving Nigeria without representation at the high-level international meeting, the President
delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead the Nigerian delegation to the UNGA. Channels Television had earlier reported that Shettima was mandated by Tinubu to represent him and deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the General Debate.
Lawal explained that the President’s absence should be understood within the context of his other engagements and the delegation of responsibilities to his Vice President.
