US Congressman Bill Huizenga became emotional as he accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of “sitting back” and failing to address widespread killings in Nigeria, Peak Newspaper reports.
Speaking on Thursday, November 20, before the US House Subcommittee on Africa, reviewing Nigeria’s redesignation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), Huizenga criticized the Nigerian government for downplaying the crisis in Washington.
“It ought to be outrageous that Christians, moderate Muslims, and anyone terrorized by radicalized Islamists are suffering while the Tinubu government sits back and does not act,” he said, fighting back tears.
The Congressman expressed disbelief at how some officials and media narratives minimized the attacks, citing personal connections to Nigeria and firsthand accounts of the ongoing violence. He recalled the Christmas Eve 2023 attack that killed 200 people, warning that the security situation has not improved.
Questioning the pattern of religious violence, Huizenga asked, “Do we see Christians killing Muslims the way radicalized Islamists kill Christians in Muslim areas?”
The subcommittee is also expected to hear testimony from senior US State Department officials and Nigerian religious leaders. The hearing follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to place Nigeria back on the CPC list on October 31, 2025.
