Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has accused telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria of exploiting subscribers through what he described as excessive and unjustified data depletion, Peak Newspaper reports
Sowore made the remarks in a viral video circulating on social media, where he alleged that MTN engages in practices that result in customers losing purchased data within short periods without clear explanation.
“We have to go after MTN, they’re the biggest data thieves in the world today,” Sowore said, claiming that users often buy data worth thousands of naira only to find it exhausted by the next day.
The activist further alleged that such practices amount to economic exploitation, arguing that the situation is negatively affecting millions of Nigerians who rely on mobile data for communication, business and daily activities.
His comments have since triggered widespread reactions online, with some users echoing similar concerns about rapid data consumption, while others called for regulatory authorities to investigate the claims and ensure transparency in telecom billing systems.
