Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved an additional ₦50,000 for all public sector workers in the state for the month of May as part of measures to cushion the impact of the current economic challenges, Peak Newspaper reports
The announcement was made during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, where the governor, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, said the gesture was aimed at supporting workers amid rising cost of living and inflationary pressures.
According to the state government, the extra payment will be added to workers’ salaries across ministries, departments, and agencies, providing temporary financial relief to thousands of civil servants in the state.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the decision was taken in recognition of the vital role workers play in sustaining the growth and development of Lagos, describing them as the backbone of the state’s progress. He acknowledged the economic difficulties faced by residents, including rising fuel prices and increasing cost of basic necessities, assuring that the government remains committed to improving workers’ welfare.
The governor further reiterated his administration’s focus on addressing structural challenges affecting workers, including housing, transportation, and overall living conditions, while maintaining dialogue with labour unions to ensure continued industrial harmony.
The move has been widely seen as a relief intervention designed to ease financial burdens on workers, especially as many households continue to grapple with the effects of ongoing economic reforms and inflation across the country.
