Tension erupted in Abuja on Monday as police officers reportedly fired teargas at protesters demanding the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

FreeNnamdiKanuNow, was led by activist Omoyele Sowore, who had earlier called for nationwide demonstrations on October 20 to demand Kanu’s freedom and justice.
What Happened:
According to viral videos online, the protest began calmly in the early hours but quickly turned chaotic when police advanced on the crowd.
Sowore, seen with Kanu’s lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, was heard pleading, “Don’t teargas us,” moments before officers reportedly fired teargas canisters, dispersing protesters and passersby.
Background:
Nnamdi Kanu has been detained by the DSS since his arrest and extradition from Kenya in 2021.
Although a Court of Appeal ordered his release, the government has refused to comply, citing national security concerns.

The incident has sparked outrage across social media, with citizens and rights groups condemning what they call an ättäck on peaceful protest and free speech.
Activists vow to continue pressing until Kanu is released and the rule of law upheld.
