There was celebration in parts of Enugu State as Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, returned to Nigeria following her release from a United Kingdom prison, Peak Newspaper reports.
Beatrice arrived in Abuja last week Tuesday, January 21, 2026, and was received by family members and close associates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. It was her first visit to Nigeria since the criminal case involving the Ekweremadu family began in mid-2022.
News of her return triggered jubilation in her hometown of Mpu, Enugu State, where residents and supporters welcomed what they described as the end of a difficult chapter for the family. The celebrations came even as her husband remains incarcerated in the UK.
Beatrice Ekweremadu was convicted in May 2023 by a London court for conspiracy related to the travel of a 21-year-old Lagos-based street trader to the UK in connection with an illegal organ transplant plan. The kidney was intended for the couple’s daughter, Sonia, who has a chronic kidney condition. The case was prosecuted under the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015, marking the first time the law was applied to an organ harvesting prosecution.
She was sentenced to four years and six months in prison but was released after serving half of the term. UK authorities commonly allow early release for non-violent offenders. Reports indicate that her good conduct in custody and measures to reduce prison overcrowding contributed to her release.
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who was identified by the court as the central figure in the conspiracy, is serving a longer sentence of nine years and eight months. Efforts by the Nigerian government to secure his release or transfer to Nigeria have so far been unsuccessful. A proposed prisoner transfer arrangement discussed in late 2025 was reportedly declined by the UK Home Office over concerns about sentence enforcement.
Another defendant in the case, Dr Obinna Obeta, described as the medical intermediary, remains in a UK prison serving a 10-year sentence. Their daughter, Sonia, who was cleared of any wrongdoing, continues to reside in the UK where she is undergoing medical treatment.
While Beatrice Ekweremadu’s return has brought relief and celebration to her supporters at home, the case continues to cast a long shadow over the family as the remaining sentences are served abroad.
