Former Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has sparked fresh controversy with explosive allegations that the recent mass abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area was staged by the Oyo State Government to blackmail President Bola Tinubu, Peak Newspaper reports
In a statement that has dominated social media discussions on Monday, June 1, 2026, Fayose claimed the May 15 coordinated attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinle, Esiele, and Yawota communities was “orchestrated” to discredit the President.
He described Governor Seyi Makinde as operating as an “emergency opposition” figure after allegedly receiving federal support.
The incident saw armed gunmen abduct about 39 students (including toddlers as young as two) and seven teachers from three schools. One mathematics teacher was killed, while an abducted principal, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, released videos pleading for negotiation rather than force.
President Tinubu condemned the killing as “barbaric,” sympathised with affected families and Governor Makinde, and directed security agencies to intensify rescue efforts.
Governor Makinde has visited affected communities, hinted at possible negotiations, and suspended school excursions.
Fayose’s claim, however, has drawn sharp criticism, with many describing it as insensitive given the ongoing trauma of victims still in captivity after over two weeks.
No official evidence has emerged to support the staging allegation.Political watchers say the statement underscores deepening rivalries within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and broader tensions between state and federal actors amid Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
