Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has revealed that he regrets his decision to run as the vice-presidential candidate with Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 presidential election.
He shared his thoughts during an interview aired on Arise Television, where he opened up about the mismatch between his political choice and the expectations of the people in his home state.
Okowa said that while he was campaigning, he noticed that many people in Delta State did not support the idea of another northerner becoming president.
Despite being nominated at the national level by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he now believes he should have considered the mood of his people more carefully before accepting the position.
He also addressed recent criticism from former Senate President Bukola Saraki over his move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okowa dismissed Saraki’s comments, reminding the public that Saraki had also switched between parties in the past.
He questioned Saraki’s credibility to speak about political loyalty.
Okowa explained that the decision to leave the PDP was not made in haste.
According to him, it was a result of months of internal disagreements and confusion within the party.
He said that political leaders in Delta State held several meetings before concluding that the PDP was no longer the right platform for them.
He added that the refusal of PDP governors to unite and the ongoing leadership disputes showed that the party was not ready to face future elections properly.
This situation, he said, left them with no choice but to find a new political direction.
