The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has denied claims that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, authorized the arrest of a journalist.
In a statement, a police spokesperson clarified that upon being notified of the incident, the IGP immediately ordered an investigation and directed that the journalist be released. The Force stressed that the arrest was not carried out on the instructions of the police leadership.
The NPF further emphasized that any isolated misconduct by individual officers should not be interpreted as institutional hostility toward press freedom, reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and the protection of journalists in the discharge of their duties.
The police said appropriate action would be taken against any officers found culpable following the investigation.
