The Lagos State House of Assembly has advanced discussions on a proposed tenancy bill aimed at addressing issues affecting tenants and landlords across the state, Peak Newspaper reports.
According to a statement posted on the official X handle of the Lagos State Government, the bill has reached the committee stage at the Assembly and is expected to introduce reforms targeted at resolving persistent challenges within the housing sector.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly is working on a new tenancy bill that will address all concerned issues and relieve tenants and homeowners of their concerns. Currently, the tenancy bill is at Committee Stage at the House of Assembly,” the government stated.
The announcement formed part of wider updates from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) on efforts to improve regulation, transparency and professionalism in the real estate sector.
The state government explained that the proposed legislation is expected to establish a clearer legal framework for tenancy matters, strengthen dispute resolution processes and promote a fairer relationship among landlords, tenants and property agents.
The development comes amid increasing public concerns over rising rent prices, tenancy agreements, agency fees and access to affordable housing in Lagos.
The government also highlighted several initiatives by LASRERA, including stakeholder engagements across the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas, public awareness campaigns across the IBILE divisions, and stricter enforcement against fraudulent and unregistered real estate operators in the state.
According to the statement, LASRERA recently sealed the office of an unregistered real estate operator in the Owutu area of Ikorodu as part of efforts to sanitise the sector.
The agency further advised residents to patronise only registered and licensed estate agents to reduce the risk of falling victim to fraudulent practices in the property market.
