The National Assembly has pledged full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in strengthening national security and driving key reforms aimed at improving governance and stabilising Nigeria’s economy, Peak Newspaper reports.
This assurance was given by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, after leading principal officers of the Senate on a traditional Sallah homage to President Tinubu at his Lagos residence on Thursday.
Akpabio said lawmakers were ready to work closely with the executive to address security challenges, noting that while improvements have been recorded, more efforts are still required to protect vulnerable communities across the country.
He explained that the National Assembly is considering the establishment of a structured state policing system under a national regulatory framework, aimed at enhancing local security response while maintaining federal oversight and coordination.
According to him, the proposed system would include a central commission responsible for recruitment, training, promotion, and discipline, while also encouraging citizens to actively support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
On economic reforms, Akpabio commended President Tinubu’s policies, citing the removal of fuel subsidy, unification of exchange rates, and infrastructure projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as key steps toward long-term national growth and development.
