The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man, Hamisu Abdullahi, for allegedly shouting “no water, no light” during an official visit by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Peak Newspaper reports.
The incident reportedly occurred in Suleja when the governor paid a visit to the Emir following the Eid-el-Fitr prayers on Friday.
According to police authorities, Abdullahi allegedly raised the chant in protest over the lack of basic amenities, drawing attention during the high-profile visit. Security operatives swiftly moved in and apprehended him at the scene.
The arrest has since sparked mixed reactions, with some citizens expressing concern over freedom of expression, while others argue that such actions during official events could be seen as disruptive.
The police have stated that investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be processed in accordance with the law.
