The government of Lagos State has announced plans to remove children from the streets during school hours as part of efforts to improve education and protect minors from street-related risks, Peak Newspaper reports
According to state officials, the initiative is aimed at ensuring that school-age children are in classrooms instead of roaming the streets during learning hours.
Authorities say many children are often seen hawking, begging, or roaming around markets and major roads during school hours, a situation the government believes negatively affects their education and welfare.
Officials say enforcement teams may be deployed across different parts of Lagos to identify school-age children who are outside during school hours and ensure they are returned to school. Parents and guardians may also be held accountable if their children are found repeatedly roaming the streets instead of attending school.
The Lagos State government stressed that the policy is part of its broader plan to improve education standards and safeguard the future of children in the state.
Education advocates have long argued that keeping children in school is critical for reducing poverty, improving literacy, and creating better opportunities for young people.
