The Lagos State government has arraigned 17 individuals before a mobile court for public urination and defecation, offences that violate state sanitation and public health laws, Peak Newspaper reports.
The offenders were charged under relevant provisions of the Lagos State Public Health Law, which aim to curb unhygienic practices and maintain cleanliness in public spaces. Those found guilty could face fines, community service, or short-term detention, depending on the court’s judgment.
Authorities said the arrests reflect the state’s ongoing campaign to enforce environmental sanitation and educate residents on proper hygiene practices. Law enforcement officers reminded the public that maintaining clean streets is a shared responsibility, and repeated violations will attract stricter penalties.
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and other agencies continue to monitor high-traffic areas, particularly markets and bus stops, to reduce public health risks associated with indiscriminate waste disposal.
