The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has warned that rising insecurity across Nigeria poses a serious threat to the conduct of free and fair elections ahead of the 2027 general polls, Peak Newspaper reports
Amupitan made the statement during a meeting with security stakeholders in Abuja, where he stressed that elections cannot be regarded as credible if voters, electoral officials, and political actors feel unsafe participating in the process. He noted that violence, voter intimidation, electoral threats, and attacks in different parts of the country continue to undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.
According to the INEC chairman, the growing scale of insecurity requires urgent and coordinated action among security agencies, electoral bodies, and other stakeholders to prevent disruptions during elections. He called for comprehensive security risk assessments and proactive measures to identify potential flashpoints before the commencement of electoral activities.
Amupitan further emphasized that ensuring the safety of voters and electoral personnel remains critical to protecting the integrity and credibility of future elections in the country.
