Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that MultiChoice-owned DStv must appear before the Nigerian Senate over concerns surrounding its billing system and treatment of Nigerian subscribers, Peak Newspaper reports.
Akpabio made the remarks during deliberations at the Senate, where lawmakers discussed issues relating to South African businesses operating in Nigeria amid growing diplomatic tensions linked to xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. He questioned why DStv operates a more flexible pay-per-view system in South Africa while Nigerian subscribers are subjected to different billing practices.
The Senate President stated that Nigeria would not allow foreign companies to exploit citizens unfairly, insisting that the company must explain its pricing structure and operations before lawmakers. He stressed that South Africa cannot try this in Nigeria, warning that Nigerians deserve fairness and respect in business dealings.
His comments came amid heated debates in the Senate over renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, with some lawmakers calling for tougher economic measures against South African interests operating in Nigeria.
