Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has reportedly returned N4 trillion to the Federal Government, Peak Newspaper reports
This amount was allegedly taken during his time in office. According to sources close to the investigation, Emefiele also relinquished ownership of six banks associated with him.
In a related matter, a former CBN Deputy Governor, Tunde Lemo, is said to have refunded $500 million that was misappropriated from taxpayers. Most startling, however, is the discovery of $275 million in an account belonging to the six-year-old son of Sabiu Yusuf, who was a Personal Assistant to former President Muhammadu Buhari. Additionally, another N1.5 trillion has been traced to Yusuf’s personal account.
Special Investigator Jim Osayande Obazee and his team reportedly uncovered these funds. The investigation revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently working with influential Nigerians to recover these funds discreetly. Recently, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu expressed concerns that the current administration inherited a financially troubled country due to extensive looting during Buhari’s term.
Mr. Obazee was appointed to investigate CBN activities under Emefiele and related matters. So far, his efforts have led to the recovery of over N12 trillion, primarily misappropriated by officials from the previous administration. The investigation committee has also turned down several bribery attempts in the millions of dollars.
