As Nigerians observed Democracy Day on June 12, many frustrated citizens took to the streets in Lagos to express their dissatisfaction with the economic situation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The demonstrators gathered at the Ikeja Underbridge area, demanding a reversal of certain government policies that they believe are worsening the nation’s economic condition.
According to Naija News, the protesters displayed various placards bearing messages like “Reverse Electricity Tariff Hike” and “No one deserves a death sentence for protesting against hunger,” as security officers looked on.
Despite the presence of law enforcement, the protesters continued their peaceful demonstration. Earlier in the day, they had occupied major parts of Ikeja to voice their grievances about poor governance on a day meant to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The PUNCH reported that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, arrived at the protest site to engage directly with the demonstrators.
Also reacting to the situation, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, shared updates on social media. Posting video clips from the protest, he assured the public that the situation was under control and there was no need for panic.
Hundeyin wrote: “Democracy Day celebrants and protesters at Ikeja Underbridge. Adequate security on the ground for celebrants and protesters alike.
“No cause for alarm. Your safety and security remain our priority. #LagosPoliceNG”
