Nigerian activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has sparked widespread debate online after questioning whether winners of the reality TV show Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) truly receive the prize money announced at the end of each season, Peak Newspaper reports.
In a post shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Adeyanju wondered why many past winners of the popular reality show appear to struggle financially despite being declared multimillionaires after their victories.
“Do they really give BBNaija winners the prize money? The reason I am asking is because many of them end up looking extremely broke thereafter,” he wrote.
His statement comes shortly after Imisi was crowned the winner of Big Brother Naija Season 10, reportedly walking away with a ₦150 million grand prize, which includes cash and various sponsorship deals.
Adeyanju’s post has since generated mixed reactions from fans and social media users. While some agreed with his observation, suggesting that the show’s contracts might reduce the winners’ actual take-home earnings, others argued that poor financial management and lavish lifestyles often lead many ex-housemates to lose their winnings quickly.
As the time of filing this report organizers of Big Brother Naija are yet to respond to Adeyanju’s comments.
