The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor, the member representing Obubra I State Constituency, following allegations of domestic violence involving his wife, Peak Newspaper reports.
The suspension was announced during plenary on Thursday after a motion moved by Hon. Davies Etta and seconded by Hon. Francis Bassey Asuquo, with lawmakers condemning the alleged conduct as unbecoming of a public office holder.
According to the Assembly, Agbor has been barred from all legislative activities pending the outcome of an investigation into the allegations. An ad-hoc committee has also been constituted to examine the matter and report its findings to the House for further action.
During the session, the Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, emphasized that lawmakers must uphold the dignity and integrity of the legislature, stressing that the House would not tolerate conduct capable of bringing the institution into disrepute.
Reports indicate that the embattled lawmaker had faced public criticism over alleged incidents of domestic violence.
However, his wife reportedly appealed for privacy and stated that the family had resolved their issues internally.
The suspension will remain in effect until the committee concludes its investigation and the Assembly decides on further legislative action.
