In a dramatic turn of events, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, was arrested by security operatives at the Federal High Court in Abuja moments ago, Peak Newspaper reports.
Condemning the arrest, Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, described the action as “preposterous” and “a mockery of the Nigerian judicial system.” He demanded Sowore’s immediate release, calling on the authorities to “stop the shenanigans.”
“The police and the Tinubu regime are making a mockery of our judicial system. He should be freed immediately,” Effiong stated in a post reacting to the incident.
Details surrounding the reason for Sowore’s arrest remain unclear at the time of filing this report. However, witnesses at the court premises said security agents whisked him away shortly after court proceedings began.
Sowore, a known critic of the government and former presidential candidate, has had several previous confrontations with security agencies over his activism and calls for democratic reforms in Nigeria.
