The Rivers State House of Assembly on Tuesday rejected a N100,000 transfer credited to lawmakers’ accounts by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, calling it unsolicited and unlawful. Sources told Peak Newspaper.
Hon Enemi George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, the lawmakers said public funds must follow due process, including legislative approval.
The funds were immediately returned. George accused the governor of routinely withdrawing from the state consolidated revenue account without approval since 2023, in defiance of the Constitution and the Supreme Court. Civil servants, by contrast, received approved Christmas bonuses, highlighting the House’s concern over the bypassed procedure.
The Assembly vowed to continue upholding its constitutional duties and curbing unlawful financial practices.
