The Ondo State governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has asked traditional rulers in the state to desist from going beyond their territories, especially disputed areas, to install or appoint minor chiefs.
Governor Aiyedatiwa warned that his government would not condone any form of hegemony or expansionist tendency that could lead to a crisis anywhere in the state.
Peak Newspaper Nigeria reports that the governor gave the warning while presenting the instrument of appointment and staff of office to Oba Ademola Ogebe Akinbule, the Yasere of Oriretan, and Oba Olusola Joseph Ajaka, the Gboguron of Idiogba Alagbon, both in Ilaje Local Government Area.
Lucky Aiyedatiwa cautioned against the misuse of traditional authority, urging monarchs to refrain from using their instruments of office to settle personal scores or witch-hunt rivals and former contestants. Instead, he charged them to embrace peace, unity, and development as key priorities in their reigns.
The Governor further appealed for the cooperation of traditional rulers in the collective task of securing communities across the state.
“You must continue to exercise restraints and caution in the use of the traditional authority and powers. This instrument, which you are being presented today, should be deployed to strengthen the peace and cohesion of your domain and that of the state in general,” Aiyedatiwa said.
The newly installed monarch, thanked the Aiyedatiwa administration for ensuring his accession to the throne and assuring the government of his commitment to sustaining peace.
The traditional ruler promised to engender programmes that would promote the culture of the people of the community.
The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, urged the people to fully cooperate with the government in maintaining law and order.
