Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has approved a weekly day off and a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for civil servants in the state as part of measures to cushion the effects of rising fuel costs and economic hardship, Peak Newspaper reports.
The approval was disclosed in a statement by the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, who said the initiative would take effect from April 2026 and run for an initial period of three months.
According to the government, the intervention is aimed at easing the burden of transportation on workers and improving their overall welfare amid increasing cost of living driven by fuel price hikes.
Under the arrangement, eligible civil servants will enjoy one day off duty per week in addition to receiving the monthly transport allowance, with ministries and agencies directed to structure the schedule in a way that does not disrupt government operations.
However, the state government clarified that some categories of workers, including medical personnel, teachers, judicial officers, security operatives and other essential service providers, are exempted from the weekly day-off policy due to the critical nature of their duties.
Despite the exemption, the affected workers will still benefit from the ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance, ensuring that all categories of public servants receive some level of financial relief.
The government described the measure as a temporary but strategic response to current economic realities, noting that it is designed to boost morale, enhance productivity and support workers as they navigate ongoing financial pressures.
