Twenty-seven people have been rescued while nine bodies have been recovered following the collapse of a multi-storey building in the Alakija area of Lagos State, Peak Newspaper reports.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the rescue operation involved emergency responders who worked through the debris to locate trapped victims after the building collapsed.
According to the agency, the rescued victims received immediate medical attention from emergency personnel before being taken to health facilities for further treatment.
LASEMA said the fatalities included victims recovered from the rubble during the search operation, adding that the remains were handed over to relevant authorities for identification and further procedures.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over building safety standards, regulatory compliance and the need for stricter monitoring of construction activities across Lagos State.
Emergency agencies, including rescue teams and other relevant authorities, were deployed to the scene to manage the situation and ensure that no more victims remained trapped under the collapsed structure.
The Lagos State Government has continued to emphasise the importance of adherence to building regulations, as officials investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Building collapses remain a recurring safety concern in Nigeria, with authorities often attributing incidents to issues including structural defects, poor construction practices and violations of building approval standards.
