The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has tackled activist and Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, over his comments, where he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal”.
Nyesom Wike’s statement to Sowore suggests that Rivers State is fortunate to have a governor who respects the rule of law, implying that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s actions are guided by legal frameworks and democratic principles. However, opinions about President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the rule of law are divided.
President Tinubu has expressed his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, adhering to the principles of separation of powers, and tolerating dissent within the bounds of the law.
Tinubu’s government has implemented reforms aimed at improving the judiciary, including a 300% increase in judicial officers’ salaries and allowances.
The President has also supported local government autonomy, citing a Supreme Court verdict granting financial autonomy to local government councils.
Some critics argue that Tinubu’s administration has not done enough to protect human rights, citing instances of heavy-handed measures against protests and restrictions on civic space.
Others have expressed concerns about the administration’s approach to governance, suggesting that it prioritizes control over open dialogue and democratic principles.
