The University of Ibadan has emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked institution in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, Peak Newspaper reports.

Results published on Thursday show UI placed in the 801–1000 global band, making it the top-ranked Nigerian university in the latest edition. The ranking marks a return to the top for the country’s premier university, a position it last held in 2023.

The 2026 rankings assessed 2,191 universities across 115 countries using 18 performance indicators grouped into five areas. These are teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook. The assessment drew on more than 174.9 million citations from 18.7 million research publications, alongside survey responses from over 108,000 scholars worldwide.

UI rose from fourth position nationally in the 2025 rankings to reclaim first place, displacing Covenant University, which led Nigerian institutions in the 2024 and 2025 editions.

The University of Lagos ranked second in Nigeria and was the only other local institution to feature in the global top 1000. UNILAG was also placed in the 801–1000 band.

Bayero University Kano, Covenant University, and Landmark University were ranked in the 1001–1200 global category.

On specific performance indicators, UNILAG recorded the highest research quality score among Nigerian universities at 66.7. Bayero University Kano led nationally in international outlook, while Covenant University ranked highest for industry engagement, reflecting strong links with the private sector.

Several institutions, including Ahmadu Bello University, the Federal University of Technology Minna, the University of Ilorin, the University of Jos, and the University of Nigeria Nsukka, were placed in the 1201–1500 band. Others appeared in the 1501+ category, highlighting persistent challenges in global competitiveness.

Overall, 51 Nigerian universities featured in the 2026 rankings. Only UI and UNILAG made the global top 1000, while 27 institutions that submitted data were not ranked.

Globally, the University of Oxford retained the number one position for the tenth consecutive year, supported by a strong research environment score. Princeton University rose to joint third place, marking its best-ever performance, while China increased its presence in the top 40 to five universities. India recorded the second-highest number of ranked universities for the first time, behind the United States.
