President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that Nigeria’s economy is currently turning around and that the benefits of the hard economic decisions he has taken since assuming office in May 2023, are already yielding fruits.

Tinubu said he got discouraged that he almost stopped watching or reading the newspapers due to the country. He, however, assured that the country’s economic situation is turning around for good.

Speaking in Katsina over the weekend, the President said:

“Nigeria is a success. The economy is turning around, it has bent the corner. When we started it was challenging. I almost ran away from watching the news or reading the newspaper. I just lost courage and stay out in my decision believing that the ability of a leader to take decision at the right time is the hallmark of leadership. We took it, stay with it, and it will be rewarding, It is already bearing fruits”.

This comes as the ongoing president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, decried Nigeria’s declining GDP per capita, noting that countries like South Korea and other Asian giants have left the country behind.

He said despite the fact that Nigeria and the two Asian countries were once almost at par in GDP per capita.

Adesina made this remarks during his keynote address at the 20th anniversary dinner of investment firm Chapel Hill Denham in Lagos.
