Dr. Stephen Akintayo, a Nigerian entrepreneur and motivational speaker, continues to share business lessons, inspirational quotes and personal development advice on social media despite facing criticism and online banter from some members of the public, Peak Newspaper reports.

In a recent post, Akintayo shared a message that read, “Do not follow a mentor without their own scars.” Other messages featured on his Business Growth Conference 2026 graphics encouraged people to learn from experienced mentors, prepare for challenges and understand that knowledge is a continuous journey.

However, his motivational posts have also attracted negative reactions from some social media users, with critics questioning his advice and expressing their dissatisfaction with him in harsh terms.

This situation raises an important question: Can we disagree with someone, correct their mistakes and still allow them the dignity to grow?

The Two Sides of the Story

On one side, people have the right to question public figures, especially those who offer business advice, mentorship and guidance to others. Anyone who chooses to occupy a position of influence should be prepared for scrutiny. Motivational speakers and business mentors are not above criticism, and their claims, conduct and professional advice should be open to reasonable examination.

Where there are legitimate concerns, they should not be ignored simply because the person involved is popular or influential. Constructive criticism can expose mistakes, encourage accountability and help others make informed decisions.

On the other side, criticism can become counterproductive when it turns into personal attacks, mockery and repeated attempts to humiliate someone. There is a difference between identifying a mistake and making it one’s mission to destroy the person who made it.

A person can be challenged without being stripped of their dignity. Someone can be held accountable without every new post becoming an opportunity for insults.

Correction Should Not Become Destruction

One of the lessons society needs to embrace is that correcting someone you love or respect does not mean pulling them down completely.

If Stephen Akintayo has made mistakes, legitimate concerns should be addressed with facts, fairness and clear explanations. If his advice is wrong, people should explain why it is wrong. If his actions have disappointed others, he should be willing to listen, reflect and make necessary changes.

At the same time, those offering criticism should ask themselves whether their goal is to encourage improvement or simply to inflict pain.

Nobody becomes better through praise alone, but neither does every insult qualify as correction. True correction seeks progress, while destructive criticism often seeks humiliation.

Stephen Akintayo Also Has a Responsibility

While public criticism can be harsh, Akintayo must also understand that influence comes with responsibility. Continuing to post motivational quotes may inspire some people, but inspirational messages alone cannot answer every legitimate concern people may have about a public figure.

The ability to listen is just as important as the ability to teach. Where criticism is justified, acknowledging mistakes, addressing concerns and making necessary adjustments can strengthen credibility.

He should not allow online hostility to distract him from genuine lessons he can learn. Instead, he can separate constructive feedback from personal attacks, take responsibility where necessary and continue moving forward with greater wisdom.

Growth is not only about teaching others; it is also about remaining teachable.

Let Us Learn to Disagree Without Hatred

The experience surrounding Akintayo’s online presence offers a broader lesson for social media users. Today, people can quickly turn a disagreement into a campaign of ridicule, forgetting that the person on the receiving end is human.

Public figures should be accountable, but accountability should not become an excuse for cruelty. Supporters should not silence genuine concerns, and critics should not assume that destroying someone’s reputation is the only way to demand answers.

We can question someone’s decisions without denying their achievements. We can disagree with their opinions without attacking their humanity. And we can demand accountability while still leaving room for repentance, correction and personal growth.

The message is simple: Stephen Akintayo should be willing to accept correction, and those correcting him should remember that the goal should be improvement, not total destruction.

After all, the true measure of maturity is not merely the ability to identify another person’s mistakes, but the wisdom to address those mistakes in a way that leaves room for change.

What is your opinion? Should people continue to give Stephen Akintayo constructive criticism while allowing him room to learn and grow, or do you think public figures should expect harsh reactions whenever people disagree with them?
