The Commissioner of Police for the Special Intervention Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, has shed light on the continued detention of human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, Peak Newspaper Nigeria reports.
Speaking to journalists and protesters in Abuja on Friday, Shogunle claimed that Sowore refused to make a statement during police interrogation — a move that reportedly led to the order for his detention.
The activist had honoured an invitation by the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, but was detained shortly after.
His arrest has since sparked protests in parts of the country, including Lagos, Osun, Oyo, and the FCT, with supporters demanding his immediate release within 24 hours.
Sowore had recently led a protest demanding improved welfare for retired police officers and also criticised a recent promotion exercise within the Nigeria Police Force.
