Nigerian Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has firmly stated that he never intended to step down from his position as leader of the National Assembly.

Akpabio made this declaration during Thursday’s Senate plenary in response to Senate Majority Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, who expressed full confidence in his leadership.

Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central since 2019, addressed Akpabio, saying those who expected the Senate to demand his resignation over sexual harassment allegations must now be disappointed.

He praised his colleagues for standing with the Senate President, emphasizing that lawmakers will always demand evidence when accused of wrong doing.

“By now, I’m sure you know, sir, that those who thought this Senate would ask you to step down have seen that we remain focused on our duties.

“Whatever allegations arise, we will demand proof and act in the public interest”, Bamidele stated.

In response, Akpabio said: ” Who told you I was going to step down over false allegations?

In America, innocent Black people have served 25 years in prison due to false accusations. I won’t be one of those people. If I step down now and the allegations are later proven false, they’ll say, we were unfair to Akpabio. “So, cancel that thought”

This comes after suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan sarcastically “apologized to Akpabio on Facebook, claiming she was sorry for “the crime of maintaining dignity and self respect”.

Now, Akpabio is seeking a court order to compel her to remove the satirical post.
