The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, over alleged missing oil revenue running into billions of naira, Peak Newspaper reports
The suit follows findings in the 2022 report of the Auditor-General of the Federation, which raised queries over unremitted and unaccounted oil revenues by the national oil company.
SERAP is asking the court to compel NNPCL to explain the whereabouts of the funds and to ensure full recovery and remittance to the federation account. The organisation argues that failure to account for the revenue violates constitutional provisions on transparency and public finance management.
SERAP also wants the court to order relevant anti-corruption agencies to investigate those responsible and prosecute any officials found culpable.
NNPCL has yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit.
