Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional centres across the state as part of efforts to decongest prisons and strengthen the criminal justice system, Peak Newspaper reports.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), who explained that the release was carried out under the governor’s constitutional powers of prerogative of mercy as provided in Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to the government, the inmates were recommended for release by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy after undergoing due legal and administrative review processes.
The move is part of ongoing efforts to address overcrowding in custodial centres, improve prison conditions, and enhance the efficiency of the justice system in Lagos State.
Officials noted that the exercise also aligns with broader justice sector reforms aimed at ensuring fairness, upholding the rule of law, and facilitating quicker trials by reducing the number of inmates awaiting court proceedings.
The latest release follows a similar initiative in December 2025, when 91 inmates were granted freedom, highlighting the state government’s continued commitment to easing congestion in correctional facilities.
